November 22, 2005 - The Center for the Study of Staten Island will hold its annual policy conference, "The Staten Island Economy: Past, Present, and Visioning the Future," on Friday December 2 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts building of the College of Staten Island, located at 2800 Victory Boulevard in the Willowbrook section of Staten Island. This year’s commencement speaker is Erica Jong, author of eight novels including Fear of Flying, Fanny: Being the True History of the Adventures of Fanny Hackabout-Jones and the recent novel Sappho’s Leap. Ms. Jong will also receive an honorary PhD degree from CSI, Doctor of Humane Letters.  [more]

September 2, 2004 – Friends and family members of Frank Walter and John Esposito gathered in Nansen Park on Staten Island on Saturday, August 28, for the inaugural memorial picnic for the two deceased firefighters. More than 300 attended for a day of family fun in the hot sun, and by the end of the day, the event raised over $8,000. [more]

Monday, March 15, 2004 -- The International Mineralogical Association (IMA) approved the classification of a new manganese-rich silicic edenite mineral named parvo-mangano-edenite.  The discovery of this new mineral in St. Lawrence County by Alan Benimoff adds more evidence supporting the theory that this area in upstate New York just northeast of Lake Ontario was covered by sub-tropical shallow seas approximately one billion years ago. Staten Island Project LogoMonday, February 23, 2004 -- According to a recent poll, 88 percent of Staten Islanders believe the island is facing “serious problems” related to traffic and mass transportation, with 72 percent of those believing that the problems have reached a “crisis” or “very severe” level.  The January poll, funded through the generosity of Con Edison, was conducted under the auspices of the College of Staten Island-Staten Island Project (CSI-SIP), an initiative that addresses issues central to Staten Island public life.  [more]


Monday, February 2, 2004 -- The College of Staten Island goes hi-tech with the help of Cesar Claro of the Richmond County Savings Foundation. Claro provided $25,000 to help the college purchase an interactive computer-based teaching tool to give a 21st Century boosts to the Willowbrook college’s education department. [more]

Monday, December 1, 2003 -- China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in late 2001 has brought fundamental change to the country by boosting its economic growth to become the fourth largest trading body in the world, advancing the country’s legal and governmental reforms, and creating a “floating population” class of 80 million migrant farmers. Tackling the largest issue in the Chinese government today, CSI, and The Foundation for China in the 21st Century hosts a two-day, two-borough conference, beginning Friday, December 12, 2003, that examines the reforms and challenges China faces from its WTO entry, and the crisis faced by the country’s agriculture industry. Monday, October 27, 2003 -- The City University of New York (CUNY) inaugurates a Macromolecular Assemblies Institute (MMA) at the College of Staten Island (CSI) dedicated to biotechnology research and development on Tuesday, November 18.  By studying these assemblies, researchers may gain valuable insights into the fundamentals of healing and disease, such as cellular resistance to chemotherapy, and may discover methodologies to fabricate new assemblies, such as vaccines.  [more]

Monday, November 18, 2002 - President George W. Bush announced the appointment of Rita DiMartino to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.  Born in Brooklyn, NY, DiMartino earned a B.A. from the College of Staten Island, and was inducted into the College of Staten Island’s Alumni Hall of Fame in 1986. August 26, 2002 - Rafael Herrera, assistant professor of mathematics at the College of Staten Island, was named a Guggenheim Fellow in the 2002 competition.  Herrera's research will be in the "Classification Problems in Riemannian Geometry of Manifolds with Special Structures." [more]


August 19, 2002 - CSI professor Irene Deitch was recently awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the American Psychological Association for her many important roles within the organization and the diverse and creative ways she has articulated Family Psychology.  [more]

July 16, 2002 - New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appointed Marlene Springer, president of CSI, to the New York City Charter Revision Commission. This Commission will review the entire City Charter to determine whether revision is needed and will hold a series of public meetings and hearings in all five boroughs before issuing a final report of its findings and recommendations. July 15, 2002 - CSI professor Jonathan D. Sassi was recently awarded the Ralph D. Gray Prize for the best article published in the Journal of the Early Republic for the year 2001.  Sassi's article covers the period between the Revolution and Civil War, known as the Early Republic, and focuses on the descendants of the Puritans.  [more]


June 13, 2002 - The College of Staten Island, in cooperation with the CSI Foundation, presents the annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, in the Campus Center on the Willowbrook Campus.  This year's award ceremony presents the first annual Beverly Curry Memorial Scholarship. Reflecting on the past to build a better tomorrow, Frederick Curry established this scholarship in memory of his wife Beverly Curry, whose life was taken in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.  [more]

May 31, 2002 - Graduate Story - Marie and Kelly Payne of Westerleigh will have good cause for a double celebration on Thursday, June 6, 2002. The mother/daughter pair will walk across the stage at the College of Staten Island to receive their bachelor degrees together at CSI's 26th annual commencement exercises. [more]


May 27, 2002 - After only three years, Courtney Sue Gross wraps up her undergraduate degree at the College of Staten Island... and she's continuing at CUNY for her graduate degree.  Courtney's prospects are bright, and her vision for the future is rosy, even though she went totally blind at the age of ten.  [more]


April 29, 2002 - CSI senior Ruth Duchatellier awarded first place in a statewide Science and Technology Research Competition for her research on "Expression of Aminophospholipid Translocase in Brain-derived Cell Lines." [more]

Monday, April 15, 2002 - A CSI research team visits Antarctica.  The team was headed by biology professor Richard Veit. Veit, a bird ecologist and biostatistician, also served as primary researcher. He was joined by mathematics and physics professor Bala Sundaram, and seven CSI students. [more]


April 8, 2002 - Jonathan Peters, principal investigator for the recently released study "A Model of the Total Cost of Highway Toll Collection" contends that the current models of the cost of toll collection does not include the significant environmental cost to society.  In it, Peters' extends the current models to account for these costs by demonstrating that when pollution costs are ignored, the total cost of toll collection is significantly understated. March 12, 2002 - Congressman Vito Fossella (R-NY) today announced that the temporary Staten Island Victim's Compensation Fund Help Center will be located on the campus of the College of Staten Island beginning the week of March 25. [more]


March 6, 2002 - The CSI Center for International Service presents Ms. Chanrithy Him, talking about her experiences as a child growing up under the rule of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.  Danish filmmaker Anne Gyrithe Bonne interviews CSI students and CSI President Springer for an international documentary profiling the way in which dignity and strength can develop in the midst of terrible mistreatment and persecution; stressing the power of reconciliation. March 5, 2002 - CSI marks the 30th anniversary of the Willowbrook Consent Decree, a legal agreement which changed the treatment of the developmentally disabled in New York State and ultimately, the nation. [more]


February 28, 2002 - Fulbright Fellowships have been awarded to seven faculty members at the City University of New York (CUNY) for 2001-2002. Three of these seven outstanding scholars are on faculty at the College of Staten Island (CSI). [more]
