CSI hosts summertime trip to Hawaii
at bargain-basement price
Staten Island Advance - Thursday, May 01, 2008
Trading the lapping waves of the Arthur Kill, New York Harbor, the
Atlantic Ocean or the Raritan Bay for the dramatic crash of the
Pacific Ocean surf on the white-sand beaches of Hawaii may seem
out-of-reach for most Islanders.
But this summer, College of Staten Island, Richmond College and
Staten Island Community College alumni, as well as their family and
friends, have a rare opportunity to do just that. And at a discount.
The fourth post-collegiate field trip to the Big Island of Hawaii
has been arranged by the CSI Alumni Association. Once again, CSI
geology professor Anderson Ohan, who will be wrapping up his 10th
annual study abroad class the week prior, will remain on the Island
and accompany the group, serving as an escort.
The nine-day, eight-night trip runs from July 19-27. Participants
will take geological tours of Volcanoes National Park, Rainbow Falls
and Mauna Kea Astronomical Observatory. They will also visit
Hawaii's white, black and green-sand beaches, the world's largest
volcanic mountain, Mauna Loa, and its most active volcano, Kilauea.
The cost is just $2,199 per person. In addition to the tours, this
price includes round-trip airfare from Newark Airport, four nights
at the Naniloa Hotel, four nights at the Royal Kona Hotel, daily
breakfast, airport-hotel transport and a special farewell dinner.
"The opportunity for me was not only to visit paradise, but to do so
on a very reasonable rate," said Class of 1998 graduate and current
alumni board member Vullnet Kolari, who took the trip in 2003. "I
went on my honeymoon and stayed 14 days and spent about three times
that amount. And to see paradise, it's well worth it."
The deadline to sign up is May 18. Interested alumni can contact
associate director Jennifer Lynch at 718-982-2290.
