CSI Applauds Season of Success

Staten Island Advance - Saturday, May 17, 2008

When it came time for Westerleigh resident Megan Donohue to pick a college, she decided to stick close to home.

Very close to home, in fact.

"I'm literally five minutes away," said Donohue, a College of Staten Island senior who captured the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award last night during the school's annual athletics awards banquet. "I wasn't sure I wanted to go away."

The 21-year-old softball player found the best of both worlds in her own backyard -- she compiled a 3.5 grade-point average in education while playing outfield for the Dolphins for four years.

"It really was a great overall experience," said Donohue, a Susan Wagner HS product. "I was able to participate in athletics and get a great education."

Donohue contributed to two CUNY Conference championship softball teams and said a highlight was winning a NCAA Division III regional tournament game in 2007.

Donohue also received a CUNY Conference Scholar-Athlete Award earlier in the week, one of 50 students honored at Baruch College in Manhattan.

Upon graduation in two weeks, she plans to pursue both a master's degree and a career as an elementary school teacher.

Freshman swimmer Pavel Buyanov, an NCAA champion in two events, was named Male Athlete of the Year. Junior basketball player Melanie D'Ambrosi, an All-CUNY first-team performer, was named Female Athlete of the Year.

Senior baseball pitcher Eric Waldhelm took home the Bill Cali/John Scrivani Sportsmanship Award.
