A special night for the Glennersters
Senior twins take home honors
at CSI awards dinner, while proud father savors the moment
Staten Island Advance - Saturday, May 20, 2006
Bob Glennerster Sr. wiped away tears of joy last
night during the annual athletics awards banquet at the College of
Staten Island.
Glennerster,
a cancer survivor who had a brain tumor surgically removed five
years ago, watched his 21-year-old senior twins -- Bob Jr. and Dana
-- win multiple awards.
"I feel very blessed," said Glennerster, a
48-year-old Great Kills resident and constant figure at both
baseball and softball games in Willowbrook. "If you would have told
me five years ago that I would have been here tonight ... I just
didn't think it would happen.
"It's really any father's dream to watch his
children do well. It's a parent's dream."
Bob Glennerster captured the school's Male Athlete
of the Year award for his service as an infielder on the CUNY
Conference tourney champion baseball squad.
Dana Glennerster, meanwhile, was the recipient of
the inaugural Bill Cali-John Scrivani Sportsmanship Award -- named
after the two current CSI baseball coaches who were honored as
Advance Sportsmen of the Year for 2005.
The Glennersters, both St. Joseph by-the-Sea
products, also earned a Coach's Award in their respective sports,
given partly because of excellent leadership qualities.
"I've been blessed with three wonderful, respectful
children. I've savored every moment of their collegiate careers,"
said Glennerster, who often stood at the top of the third-base
bleachers during games at the baseball stadium so he could look over
his shoulder and watch his daughter playing softball at the nearby
diamond.
"Athletics has always been a big part of my life. I
paved the way a little bit, but these kids took the ball and ran
with it. I'm really proud of them."
Glennerster recently reached an important milestone.
He has been cancer-free for five years.
"I'm savoring every moment," he said.
