Grandmother of 5 Earns Bachelor's
Staten Island Advance - Sunday, June 29, 2008
Dolores Kartalis of Sunnyside graduated cum laude from the College
of Staten Island with a bachelor of science degree in fine art and
art history.
The grandmother of five and native Staten Islander began working at
CSI in 1979, when she began taking classes.
Originally seeking an education in nursing, Ms. Kartalis also took
art and art history courses and found them to be fascinating. In
1993, she received an associate's degree from the college.
The Curtis High School graduate continued to fit courses into her
schedule, but in 1996, a car accident halted her progress for about
two years. But Mrs. Kartalis kept going and recently realized she
was only 10 credits away from a bachelor's degree.
"It was always a dream of mine to walk to that commemoration and to
hear that music," she said.
Along with the encouragement of her husband, Constantine, she
completed her degree. Mrs. Kartalis hopes that her persistence and
achievement serves a greater purpose.
"I just hope that I'm an inspiration to my grandchildren."
