Don't Miss This Year's SINY Film Festival
Here are 3 must-sees playing in your
own back yard
Staten Island Advance - Sunday, June 01, 2008
Before 2006, the thought of Staten Island (a.k.a. "the forgotten
borough") hosting a film festival almost seemed ludicrous.
Fast-forward to 2008: The Staten Island Film Festival, officially
known as the SINY Film Festival, is now in its third year, and is
gaining momentum with every turn.
The festival, presented by the Richmond County Savings Foundation,
runs this coming weekend. The event starts with opening night on
Thursday and closes with an awards ceremony on Sunday. This year,
most of the films are playing at the College of Staten Island Center
for the Arts. Some are showing at spots in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
In addition, free family movies are playing in the Richmond County
Bank Ballpark at St. George.
The festival features 55 films from across the country. Below is a
list of three must-sees. Tickets are available at
www.sifilmfestival.org.
"Greetings From the Shore"
After the recent death of her father, Jenny spends one last summer
at the Jersey Shore before she heads off to college. She soon
stumbles into the mysterious underground world of Russian sailors,
and unexpectedly finds love. "Greetings" has been set as the
opening-night film, and stars Paul Sorvino and the up-and-coming Kim
Shaw.
"Greetings From the Shore" plays Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the
Concert Hall in the College of Staten Island Center for the Arts.
"S.A.T. The Musical"
Noah is your typical teenager, with all of the typical problems that
teenagers face. His only escape is his guitar, and he is hoping that
his playing talents will carry him all the way to Juilliard. There's
just one problem, Noah has to overcome the dreaded S.A.T.s first.
"S.A.T. The Musical" plays Friday at 4 p.m. in the Concert Hall and
Saturday at 10 p.m. in the Lecture Hall -- both in CSI's Center for
the Arts.
"Don't Shoot the Pharmacist!"
Jack works in the Goodyear Pharmacy in Brooklyn. One night, while
stuck on the graveyard shift, he encounters an eclectic array of
customers -- all while fantasizing about being a roulette dealer in
Vegas.
"Don't Shoot the Pharmacist!" plays Friday at 2 p.m. in the Recital
Hall at CSI and Saturday at noon in the Lecture Hall. It also plays
Saturday at 6 p.m. at Brooklyn College's Whitman Hall.
