Many of the curriculums have long been
available at Staten Island's colleges
The key to employment success for many individuals seeking to change
or improve their careers can be found on Staten Island college
campuses in the form of certificate programs. Although today's
weakened job market -- replete with low-income workers and downsized
executives -- may be fueling the growth of such curriculums, many of
the courses have long been available here.
"We have had most of these programs for a number of years," said Dr.
Hugo Kijne, an industrial sociologist and executive director of
Continuing Education and Professional Development at the College of
Staten Island (CSI).
Certificate candidates at the Willowbrook campus can choose from a
wide selection of career paths, such as computerized accounting and
bookkeeping; medical billing and coding; paralegal; insurance
broker; administrative assistant; nursing assistant, and more.
Whether your goal is to become a security guard, or an Internet
professional by way of the Cisco Certified Network Associate
Program, curriculums like those offered at CSI can place you on the
track to a fulfilling career. For additional information regarding
the school's certificate courses, call (718) 982-2182.
Regardless of whether someone is seeking certificate-training for
their second career or to improve their first, no employment segment
is immune to downsizing, Kijne said, and "those in the low-income
group may also be victims of the economy."
FILLING A NEED
The education needs of job seekers are also being addressed at
Wagner College, Grymes Hill, where its 2-year-old career-training
initiative continues to grow in popularity.
