Four Nations
Staten Island Advance - June 6, 2004
Concert-goers talk about “listening in quiet
astonishment” to the Four Nations Ensemble, a group that seems bent
on invigorating chamber music programming without leaving the great
old stuff —Bach and Handel, Mozart and Beethoven —behind.
Four Nations will reveal it’s agenda tomorrow at 8
p.m. in the College of Staten Island’s Recital Hall. Apparently it’s
a matter of putting the music in context. The evening is being
underwritten by Michael Shugrue, a now-retired CSI professor of
English, in order to admit free of charge as many attendees as
possible.
Among the categories: All high school students, all
private music teachers and their students, all current CSI students
and alumni.
Recent presentations by the 15-year-old-group
include “Burnt & Musical Offerings,” “The Wrong Man,” “Music in the
Time of Frankenstein” and “Barn Dance” with the prize winning
fiddling group Jaybird. Eight or nine recordings exist.
Tomorrow’s program will have music by Telemann,
Handel, Leclair and Bach. Members are Charles Brink, flute, Claire
Jolivet, violin; Loretta O’Sullivan, cello, and Andrew Appel,
harpsichord.
For concert-goers who aren’t in the free-admission
categories, admission is $20.
