Rita DiMartino is a consultant and former vice
president for AT&T
Eltingville
resident Rita DiMartino has been nominated by Mayor Michael
Bloomberg to a seven-year term on the board of trustees of City
University of New York.
"It's great for Staten Island," said Bloomberg senior advisor
Vincent LaPadula, a former Staten Islander. "She's a top-notch,
quality person."
Ms. DiMartino met with Bloomberg and LaPadula at City Hall on
Thursday. She could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Ms. DiMartino earned her bachelor's degree from the College of
Staten Island, and has served on the J. William Fulbright
Scholarship Board. She replaces Islander Al Curtis on the CUNY
board.
LaPadula said the appointment should not be seen as a slight to
Curtis, whose term had expired.
"We want to give other people a chance to serve," he said.
Ms. DiMartino is a consultant and former vice president of
congressional relations for AT&T. In that role, she assisted with
the firm's relations with federal administrators, Congress and state
governments.
She is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations; the National
Council of LaRaza, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus; the Cuban
American National Council and the National Association of Latino
Elected and Appointed Officials, among other organizations.
She was inducted into the CSI Alumni Hall of Fame in 1986.
Active on all levels of Republican politics, she was elected
delegate-at-large to six Republican national conventions, served on
the platform committee in 1992 and was elected executive vice chair
of the state Republican Committee in 1988.
The CUNY board consists of 17 members, including five appointed by
the mayor. The state Senate must approve the nomination.
