College of Staten Island, St. Teresa's School
and Community School District 31 are beneficiaries
Donations were recently provided by several Staten Island
organizations to assist local community programs and projects.
The Richmond County Savings Foundation provided a $25,000 grant to
the College of Staten Island.
The grant will be used to renovate the school's Mathematics Teacher
Training Center and create a state-of-the-art teaching facility. The
funding will help purchase enhanced computer technology and enable
room modifications for electrical and security upgrades.
The facility will provide students with access to the latest
technological advances in teaching and assist the Education
Department in incorporating advanced educational technology into its
curriculum.
Foundation Executive Director Cesar J. Claro presented the check to
Richard I. Truitt, vice president for College Advancement.
SI Bank & Trust Foundation donated $10,000 to St. Teresa's School,
Castleton Corners.
The grant will help fund improvements to the auditorium, enabling
parish senior citizens to meet there throughout the year. It will
also allow for the establishment of a community theater group.
The check was presented by John Morris, treasurer of SI Bank & Trust
Foundation, and Betsy Dubovsky, executive director of the
foundation, to principal Catherine Dempsey and the Rev. John O'Hara,
pastor of St. Teresa's Parish.
Con Edison donated copies of an award-winning video series to
Community School District 31.
The video series, "Science Screen Report," is a series of
informative videotapes devoted to various topics in science,
engineering and medicine.
The series, which is funded by the utility, is designed to get the
complex story of scientific and technological developments across to
students in a positive and objective manner.
The presentation was made by Con Edison Public Affairs Manager
Michael Watson to Deputy Superintendent Scott Miller and Science
Coordinator Virginia Guido.
Finally, the South Shore Rotary yesterday donated $15,000 to 10
different Island charities. The selected charities were chosen by
the board of directors.
