Two Staten Island organizations recently
received grants from local foundations.
Verizon presented the College of Staten Island with a $5,000 check
for a new audience development effort being organized by the
school's Center for the Arts.
The presentation took place during the opening of an innovative new
series titled, The Visiting Executive Leadership Program, which is
dedicated to empowering students for success and funding important
new research initiatives. The day included a discussion about
business leadership and the value of public higher education with
more than 25 juniors and seniors.
Verizon
executives also toured the campus and attended a session of faculty
research presentations. Patrick F. McDermott, president of the CSI
Foundation, presented Paul Crotty, group president of Verizon
Communications, with an engraved medal that commemorates the
importance of Verizon's participation in the CSI program.
The event concluded with a presentation titled, Leadership and
Crisis Management in the Wake of Disaster: The Verizon Example after
9/11, a behind-the-scenes look into the corporate struggle to
re-establish a vital communications component after it was severely
hobbled by the terrorist attacks.
Also attending were Richard I. Truitt, CSI vice president of College
Advancement, and Lisa Reilly, managing and artistic director of the
Center for the Arts.
Also, the Richmond County Savings Foundation recently gave a $50,000
grant to the Staten Island division of the March of Dimes, to help
underwrite the organization's four major fund-raising events
scheduled for this year.
The grant will be used to underwrite the 2003 John Franco Celebrity
Bowl, WalkAmerica, Wonderwalk and the 11th Anniversary Star Chef &
Celebrity Gala. Funds raised at these events each year assist the
March of Dimes in its efforts to reduce and prevent birth defects
through outreach and educational programs.
The presentation was made by Cesar Claro, executive director of the
Richmond County Savings Foundation, to Frank DeMeo, executive
director of the March of Dimes, Staten Island division.
